17 years ago today, we stood at the altar, pledged our love, said our vows and entered into a covenant relationship.  A 'forever and ever till death do we part' relationship.  We each ended our vows by saying "I will be faithful to you."

And here we are, 17 years later.
The vows we made on July 27, 1996 still stand true today.

We made a choice.  We made a promise.
And we make that same choice and same promise everyday.

We make the choice to spend time with God everyday and put Him first.
We make the choice to pray for each other everyday.
We make the choice to guard our hearts and to protect each others hearts.
We make the choice to love each other, even on days when we don't feel like it.
We make the choice to invest in our marriage.
We make the choice to protect the covenant we made with God because we know that Satan hates marriage and all that it stand for.

God chose marriage to be a picture of a covenant relationship and unconditional love to a lost world and Satan has waged war on marriage, family and children.

It sometimes feels personal - because it is.
He is not playing games.
His purpose is simple, "steal and kill and destroy..." {John 10:10a}

If Satan is working so hard to destroy innocent children's lives,
then they must be very important to God.

If Satan is working so hard to kill unborn children,
then God must have big plans for their lives.

If Satan is working so hard to destroy marriages,
then the husband-wife relationships must be very powerful.

Think about it...
  • There are over 143 million orphans in the world. Children without parents to tell them they are loved, wanted, and were created for a purpose by a loving Father.
  • Since 1973, an estimated 48 million babies have been aborted in the U.S. alone. Babies that were never given a chance at life and were never told that God knew them before they were even in their mother's womb.
  • More than 1 million children worldwide will become victims of child trafficking this year.
  • And then there is the marriage statistics. You know the ones. 45-50% of all marriages end in divorce.  Families destroyed.  Promises broken.
Now, you tell me that Satan isn't waging war on the family unit.

We, as Christians, do not need to fear the enemy.
He has been defeated.
Instead, we must remain watchful and prayerful.

"Satan can growl and bark, lunge and threaten.  But when we're enclosed by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, he can do us no real or lasting harm.  But we always make a mistake when we acknowledge the Lord and keep our eyes on Satan.  Far better to acknowledge the devil while keeping our eyes on Christ."
{Robert J. Morgan, The Red Sea Rules}

What would happen if, as followers of Jesus Christ, if we made the choice everyday to reflect Jesus in our marriage and in our family.
Would the world notice?
Would the world see the difference?
Would the world still be desperate to redefine marriage and family.

I don't know about the world, but Keith and I have two little boys that will notice.
We have two little boys that will see the difference.

Everyday, they get to watch two imperfect people walk through life together making all kinds of mistakes.  They watch us mess up and apologize.  They watch us laugh together and get frustrated at each other.  But more importantly, they get to see the truth about marriage... that it isn't to make us happy, but to make us Holy.

Our 17 years have been full of great memories, amazing adventures and deep heartache. We've experience the joy of adding 2 little boys to our family and the pain of losing 2 babies.  We have lived in 5 states, 10 houses and have amazing friends spread all over the country.  We are beyond blessed and I can not wait to see what the Lord has in store for the rest of our forever.
